The South Africa Revenue Protection Association (SARPA) had the privilege of hosting its first ever Virtual Convention from 4 - 5 March, themed Harnessing Technology for Revenue Protection.

Revenue protection service providers have always played a significant role in equipping our members with insight. The convention aims to share information and knowledge between role-players in the revenue protection environment and to equip our members’ utilities to minimise revenue losses.

Every year more and more Municipal Managers, Chief Financial Officers, Councillors, Electrical, Civil and Water Engineers, SAPS, International Utilities and State Utilities attend the SARPA Convention on the basis that it is the only forum in Africa that focuses on a holistic approach to securing the income of your council or utility for services provided to the public as well as the minimizing of non-technical losses and prevention of infrastructure theft and vandalism.

Convention

The highlights of this year’s event are

the Keynote address by SALGA,
presentations by the Chairman of the International Association and
a Brigadier from the SA Police Services Legal Department,
as well as a panel discussion on AI and ML.

Good news is that the well-known performer Mr. Wicus van der Merwe will still form part of the program. Another exciting new addition to the program is the fact that Affiliate members will be provided the opportunity to do short videos between presentations.

The Association have always played a significant role in equipping those that operate within the Revenue Protection sphere with insight and knowledge regarding best practices and that is precisely what this year’s event aim to do.

The SARPA Convention is the only forum in Africa that focuses on a holistic approach to securing the income of your council or utility for services provided to the public as well as the minimizing of non-technical losses and prevention of infrastructure theft and vandalism.

Community Development

SARPA and Bitou Local Municipality are supporting VK Innovations this year which is a social enterprise that works with between 55-65 women and kids in the township of Khayelitsha, Cape Town in an effort to create employment and social empowerment, as well as contribute towards keeping children in school.

The children are trained to do cultural singing and dancing which helps them earn money for school stationary and sanitary wear for young girls. The organisation also assists these children by teaching them how to perform academically and guiding them to focus and obtain good grades in school as well as good behavior through close mentorship.

All of their products are hand-made by women-run co-ops, which means that every purchase of a VK Innovations product directly translates into work for women in townships, and materials are ethically sourced. Their products provide sustainability, fair trade and social empowerment.
